How long can wet clothes sit in the washer?
A few hours is usually fine. Leave a load overnight, especially in a warm or humid laundry room, and it can start to smell sour or musty as mildew begins to grow on damp fabric. Towels and heavy cottons go first because they stay wet the longest.
Washers with a tightly closed door, common on front-loaders, trap moisture and make it worse. Leaving the door or lid open after unloading helps the drum dry out.
How to rescue a load that smells
- Rewash it on a normal cycle with your usual detergent. Don’t just dry it: heat sets the smell.
- For a stubborn musty smell, use the warmest water the care labels allow.
- Dry the load completely, right away.
- Wipe the door seal and leave the door open so the washer itself stays fresh.
How to never forget a load again
The real fix is knowing the moment the cycle ends. LaundrySense is a smart laundry sensor that sticks onto your existing washer and dryer and sends a notification to every phone in your household when the load is done. With LaundrySense Plus, it keeps nudging until someone actually moves it.
